David Pepper vs. David Yost

The next Auditor of State will need to be an independent watchdog, with a demonstrated record of fiscal responsibility and tough-minded decisionmaking, in order to cut waste, fraud and abuse.

And in the current times in particular, the next Auditor will be working with governments across the State that face challenging budgets, tough decisions on spending cuts, and the need for reform so they can do more with less in tough times.

Candidate David Pepper’s record in office is one of grappling with these very challenges through fiscal responsibility, reform, and budget cuts—while candidate David Yost’s is the opposite

As County Commission President in Hamilton County:

  • Pepper has cut spending by $60 million in the past two years
  • Pepper has reduced spending to its lowest level in the County since 1998
  • Spending in 2010 is 16% below the level left by his predecessor in 2006.

This followed four years of balanced, bipartisan budgets David voted for while a member of Cincinnati City Council, where spending in that time was also under inflation (up only 1.6% between 2001 and 2005).

In contrast, Dave Yost’s spending has exploded since he became Prosecutor.

  • Compared to his predecessor’s final year (2002), Dave Yost has raised spending 150% in his time in office.
  • In other words, his spending now stands at 2.5 times the level of his predecessor’s final year.  ($1.48M for 2010 versus $592k for 2002).
  • These spending increases far outpaced both inflation and population growth in Delaware County.

Neither inflation nor population growth can account for such a dramatic increase in spending:
